Update of
Approved Supplemental Educational Services Providers: A Requirement of the No
Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB),
Title I, Section 1116 |
The No Child
Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB) requires Title I schools in years two and
beyond of School Improvement to offer Supplemental Educational Services (SES)
to parents of eligible children. Supplemental
Educational Services (SES) are academic enrichment
services provided outside the regular school day. These services must be of high-quality,
research-based, and designed to increase the academic achievement of eligible
children in mastering the Standards of Learning and achieving proficiency on
Standards of Learning assessments.
SES providers can be school divisions, schools, or
nonprofit or for-profit entities. The
NCLB legislation requires states to maintain an updated approved list of SES
providers.
On September 26, 2002, the Board of Education
adopted the initial list of recommended SES providers. The legislation also requires states to update
the list as needed. On June 28, 2007,
the Board of Education granted the Superintendent of Public Instruction the
authority to act on its behalf to approve SES providers. Acting on the Board's authority, on November
13, 2008, the Superintendent of Public Instruction approved the additions and
changes to the list found in Attachment A.
The complete updated list may be found on the
Department of Education's website at: https://p1pe.doe.virginia.gov/SIIS/vdoe_reports_public.jsp?report_id=approved-provider-report&report_format=pdf.
Prospective providers may continue to apply to the
Virginia Department of Education by submitting a completed SES
application. The application may be
found on the Department of Education's website at: http://www.doe.virginia.gov/VDOE/nclb/ssp_app.doc.
