COMMONWEALTH of VIRGINIA
Department of Education
January 23, 2009
TO: Division Superintendents
FROM: Patricia I. Wright, Superintendent of Public Instruction
Section 22.1-79.1 of the Code of Virginia prohibits the opening of schools prior to Labor Day unless a waiver is issued by the Board of Education for good cause as defined in the Code. Because these waivers must be approved annually, school divisions that received waivers in previous years must reapply for the 2009-2010 school year.
This department will continue to use an electronic data collection system, using the Single Sign-on for Web Systems (SSWS) for Pre-Labor Day waiver approval. However, this year additional changes have been made in the application not only to migrate its technology platform but to make it more user-friendly. The system changes are still under development at this time. Consequently, there will be a delay in the issuance of the pre-Labor Day superintendent’s memorandum, the application, and its instructions until sometime in February. Please rest assured that the application process will be made available to you as soon as it is ready. The application process will be identical to the process in place last year.
Please contact the Office of Policy at (804) 225-2092 or by e-mail at email@example.com, if you have any questions regarding this matter. Thank you for your patience as we work to enhance our technology.
