FROM: Patricia I. Wright, Superintendent of Public Instruction
The purpose of this memorandum is to notify you of an additional graphing calculator, the TI-73 Explorer, which may be used on the Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II end-of-course Standards of Learning assessments beginning with the spring 2009 test administration. While the TI-73 Explorer does not have all of the functionality of a regular graphing calculator, it has all of the functions needed on the end-of-course mathematics assessments.
For a list of other graphing calculators that may be used on the end-of-course mathematics assessments, please see the SOL Examiner’s Manual - End-Of-Course Mathematics at http://www.doe.virginia.gov/testing/test_administration/manuals/examiners/eoc_mathematics.pdf
2008-09EOCMathFINALPRINT.pdf. Regardless of the graphing calculator used, it is important to remember that the memory must be reset prior to test administration, clearing all memory contents not built into the calculator’s system.
If you have questions about the use of graphing calculators, please contact Deborah Kiger Bliss, mathematics coordinator, Office of Middle and High School Instruction, by e-mail at Deborah.Bliss@doe.virginia.gov or by telephone at (804) 786-6418.
