COMMONWEALTH of VIRGINIA
Department of Education
March 6, 2009
TO: Division Superintendents
FROM: Patricia I. Wright, Superintendent of Public Instruction
At the February 19, 2009, Board of Education meeting the Department of Education was authorized to proceed with the K-12 history and social science textbook and instructional materials state adoption process. It is anticipated that the textbook and instructional materials review will be completed by January 2010.
An important part of the adoption process for the K-12 history and social science textbooks and instructional materials is the review of the submitted items by administrators, curriculum supervisors, social science educators, and others who have expertise with the content of the 2008 History and Social Science Standards of Learning. The Department of Education is seeking nominations from division superintendents for individuals who are qualified and available to serve on committees to review K-12 history and social science textbooks and instructional materials during the summer of 2009. Nominees should be teachers, principals, administrators, content specialists, or others who have expertise with the content areas and the standards.
Committee members reviewing the K-12 history and social science textbooks and instructional materials will be asked to review the submitted items related to their content areas, and submit correlation worksheets to the Department, prior to convening for a two-day meeting on July 28-29, 2009, for a final review of all submitted materials. Committee members who are not under contract with a school division will receive a stipend, and all committee members may receive recertification points, pending the approval of their school division. The Department of Education will cover expenses for mileage, meals, and lodging related to the review process.
A nomination form to be duplicated as needed for interested individuals is attached. Please return nomination forms by April 3, 2009. Committee members will be notified on or before May 8, 2009. Committee members will be selected on the basis of expertise and experience in history and the social sciences and balanced regional representation.
