The Virginia Department of Education is pleased to announce the fifth annual “From Vision to Practice Institute: Seven Million Minutes From Pre-Kindergarten to Graduation,” to be held July 14-16, 2009, at the Holiday Inn Select Koger South Conference Center in Richmond, Virginia. The focus of the Institute is to identify best practices and interventions that will support increased graduation rates. The Institute will include a planning session to provide the opportunity for every school division team to develop a plan for increasing the graduation rate. The recommended attendees for the Institute are: 1) administrators; 2) principals; 3) teachers; 4) school counselors; 5) pupil service personnel, or others who provide support to students in the area of high school completion.

Registration - The Office of Continuing and Professional Education at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) will manage online registration. School divisions should designate one individual to register a maximum of five participants from their division. The deadline for registration is June 17, 2009. If the registration form submitted indicates that additional staff members are interested in attending the Institute, the designee will be informed if space is available after June 17, 2009. Lodging – Lodging costs for July 13-15, 2009, for those outside of the Richmond Metropolitan area will be paid by the Department. However, it is the responsibility of attendees to make their own reservation. The room cost will be master-billed to the Department upon departure. Room reservations must be made by June 17, 2009. A block of rooms has been reserved from July 13-15, 2009, at two hotels. When making reservations, please reference “Virginia Department of Education, From Vision to Practice Institute.”

Authorized Expenses – Evening meals, parking, and travel costs are the responsibility of attendees; however, these expenses are authorized activities and may be charged to local Title I, Part A; Title II, Part A; Title III, Part A; or Title IV, Part B, budgets. Materials, breakfast, lunch, and breaks will be provided. Participants are asked to be present for all meal functions.
