COMMONWEALTH of VIRGINIA
Department of Education

April 3, 2009

TO: Division Superintendents

FROM: Patricia I. Wright, Superintendent of Public Instruction

SUBJECT: Update of Approved Instructional Intervention Provider to Satisfy Provisions in the Standards of Accreditation (SOA)

The Regulations Establishing Standards for Accrediting Public Schools in Virginia require schools accredited with warning in English or mathematics to adopt and implement instructional interventions that have a proven track record of success at raising student achievement.

On June 28, 2007, the Board of Education granted the Superintendent of Public Instruction the authority to act on its behalf to approve Instructional Intervention providers. Acting on the Board’s authority, on March 13, 2009, the Superintendent of Public Instruction approved one addition to the list that may be found in Attachment A.

The complete updated list may be found on the Department of Education’s website.

Prospective providers may continue to apply to the Virginia Department of Education by submitting a completed Instructional Intervention application for reading and/or mathematics. The applications may be found on the Department of Education’s website.

For more information about the instructional interventions, contact Phil Iovino, Title I specialist, by e-mail at Phil.Iovino@doe.virginia.gov or by telephone at (804) 371-2934.
