SUBJECT: Summer Professional Development Academy on Parental Participation

As part of the Virginia Department of Education’s ongoing effort to assist school divisions in meeting the parental participation requirements for Title I, Part A, Academic Achievement of the Disadvantaged, and Title III, Part A, Language Instruction for Limited English Proficient and Immigrant Students, under the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, a summer professional development academy will be offered. The two-day academy entitled Parents as Educational Partners (PEP): School Related Curriculum for Language Minority Parents will be offered on July 29-30, 2009, in Blacksburg, Virginia. The academy will prepare facilitators to train school division personnel on appropriate programs to assist Limited English Proficient (LEP) parents in overcoming the language and cultural barriers that make them particularly vulnerable to being left out of their children’s educational experiences.

The academy will be held at The Inn at Virginia Tech and Skelton Conference Center, 901 Prices Fork Road, Blacksburg, Virginia. Registration for the training will be limited to 40 participants. Materials, lunch, and breaks will be provided. Travel will be reimbursed at the state rate. For those requiring lodging, a block of overnight rooms at the state rate has been reserved. Hotel rooms will be direct-billed to the Virginia Department of Education. Please contact The Inn at Virginia Tech and Skelton Conference Center directly at (540) 231-8000 to make reservations and refer to “PEP Academy.”
