COMMONWEALTH of VIRGINIA
Department of Education
August 7, 2009
TO: Division Superintendents
FROM: Patricia I. Wright, Superintendent of Public Instruction
The Office of Early Childhood Development (spanning the Departments of Social Services and Education) was created to provide a more comprehensive effort around early child care and education issues in Virginia. The Office is partnering with a research team at Virginia Tech to develop an interactive, Web-based data system for the Commonwealth focused on early childhood initiatives. As part of this process, we are compiling information about the data that local school divisions currently collect regarding preschool and kindergarten programs.
We would very much like your input. Your division's responses to a brief online survey accessed at http://www.fivehokies.com/CH_survey/ will be most helpful in providing the researchers with guidance to continue their collection of information. A copy of the survey questions is attached. Please forward this 5-minute survey to the appropriate staff member and request his or her assistance in responding by August 21, 2009. Your assistance will be valuable in developing a system that will meet Virginia's needs on many levels. Thank you for your time and assistance.
If you have any questions or need additional information, please contact Kathy Glazer, director of the Office of Early Childhood Development, via e-mail at Kathy.Glazer@dss.virginia.gov or by telephone at (804) 726-7124.
