FROM: Patricia I. Wright, Superintendent of Public Instruction
The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) is pleased to announce the Reading First Online Reading Academy for K-3 Teachers and the Reading First Online Reading Academy for Teachers of English Language Learners to be held in the fall of 2009. These are professional development opportunities provided by the state as part of the Reading First grant.
The Reading First Online Reading Academy for K-3 Teachers and the Reading First Online Reading Academy for Teachers of English Language Learners both include a series of sessions built on scientifically based components of reading instruction: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. The Blackboard Learning System will be utilized for these courses. All coursework will be done online; participation will consist of online discussions and other activities with the instructor and participants. Upon successful completion of an online Academy, a certificate of attendance will be awarded. There is no cost for these online academies; the cost is paid for by the Reading First grant.
Enrollment in the Reading First Online Reading Academies for K-3 Teachers and the Teachers of English Language Learners is open to all Virginia elementary administrators; teachers of kindergarten, first, second and third grades; as well as K-3 English as a second language (ESL) teachers, Title I teachers, and K-12 special education teachers.
Registration will be conducted through the Reading First in Virginia website: http://www.readingfirst.virginia.edu. Registration is currently open for schools receiving Reading First funding, and will open August 24, 2009, for all other schools.
