As part of the Virginia Department of Education's ongoing effort to ensure compliance with the English Language Proficiency (ELP) assessment and standard requirements under Section 1111(b)(7) and Section 3113(b)(2) of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, fall Content and Language Integration as a Means of Bridging Success (CLIMBS) Institutes will be offered. CLIMBS is a professional development course in applying the World-Class Instructional Design and Assessment (WIDA) English Language Proficiency (ELP) Standards using a scaffolded instructional approach.
Participants in the CLIMBS Institutes will 1) gain a thorough understanding of how to integrate the WIDA ELP Standards and Standards of Learning (SOL) into classroom instruction and assessment; 2) apply research and best practices to build language proficiency for English Language Learners (ELLs); and 3) use data from ACCESS for ELLs, state achievement tests, and classroom assessments to inform instruction and develop learner profiles.
The Institutes will be held from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. at each site on the following five days: October 6-7, November 4-5, and December 1, 2009. The Institutes will include both pre-class and post-class assignments.
The Institutes will be provided in eight regions throughout the state as follows:

School divisions are encouraged to register a team of up to three people to include (1) kindergarten through 12th-grade ESL teachers; (2) middle and secondary core content teachers; and (3) elementary classroom teachers. Course participation at each CLIMBS Institute is limited to fifty participants.
Materials will be provided. Travel costs, lodging, and meals are the responsibility of attendees; however, travel expenses are authorized activities and may be charged to local Title I, Part A, and Title III, Part A, budgets.
