SUBJECT: 2010 Outstanding Middle Level Principal of Virginia (VASSP), 2010 Outstanding High School Principal of Virginia (VASSP) and 2011 Outstanding Secondary School Assistant Principal of Virginia

The Virginia Department of Education and the Virginia Association of Secondary School Principals (VASSP) are pleased to provide you with information related to the above awards. Please take the time and think about qualified members in your division who are worthy of this award and forward this memo to them and encourage them to apply.

The MetLife/NASSP National Principal of the Year program recognizes outstanding middle level and high school principals. The program honors principals who have succeeded in providing high-qualtiy learning opportunities for students as well as demonstrating exemplary contributions to the profession.

The NASSP/Virco National Assistant Principal of the Year program recognizes outstanding middle level and high school assistant principals who have demonstrated success in leadership, curriculum and personalization.

The NASSP applications are used for selecting the 2010 Outstanding Middle Level Principal of Virginia and the Outstanding High School Principal of Virginia. The state winners are then eligible to compete nationally for NASSP's High School Principal of the Year and Middle Level School Principal of the Year. This application is due to VASSP by April 1, 2010; selection will be made by May 7, 2010.

The NASSP application for Assistant Principal of the Year is used in Virginia to select the 2011 Outstanding Secondary School Assistant Principal of Virginia. This person may be either a middle level or high school assistant principal. After Virginia's selection, this individual may then compete nationally for the Assistant Principal of the Year. This application is due to VASSP by November 1, 2009; selection will be made by December 7, 2009.

All three awards in Virginia are given annually at the Virginia Middle and High School Principals Conference & Exposition held in June.
