The Virginia Department of Education is pleased to announce the Reading First Online Reading Academy for K-3 Teachers to be offered from January 25, 2010, to March 28, 2010. This is a professional development opportunity provided by the state as part of the Reading First grant.
The Reading First Online Reading Academy for K-3 Teachers includes a series of sessions built on scientifically-based components of reading instruction: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. The Blackboard Learning System will be utilized for this course. All coursework will be done online; participation will consist of online discussions and other activities with the instructor and participants. Upon successful completion of an online Academy, a certificate of attendance will be awarded for twenty-four contact hours of professional development. There is no cost for this online Academy; the cost is paid for by the Reading First grant.
Enrollment in the Reading First Online Reading Academy for K-3 Teachers is open to all Virginia elementary administrators; teachers of kindergarten, first, second and third grades; as well as K-3 English as a second language (ESL) teachers, Title I teachers, and K-12 special education teachers.
Registration will be conducted through the Reading First in Virginia website: http://www.readingfirst.virginia.edu. Registration for the Academy will open for schools receiving Reading First funding on November 2, 2009, and will open November 9, 2009, for all other schools.
