TO: Division Superintendents

FROM: Patricia I. Wright, Superintendent of Public Instruction

The Virginia Board of Education adopted the revised Curriculum Framework for the 2009 Mathematics Standards of Learning on October 22, 2009. The revised version reflects the changes for alignment to the 2009 Standards of Learning that were approved by the Board on February 19, 2009. The key that has been used is single underlines and single strikethroughs for changes that went to the Board for first review in July 2009. Double underlines and double strikethroughs were used for additional changes based on public comments from August 24 through September 18, 2009, and were included in the document that went to the Board for final review on October 22, 2009. The adopted Curriculum Framework for the 2009 Mathematics Standards of Learning can be found at http://www.doe.virginia.gov/testing/sol/standards_docs/mathematics/review.shtml. A final version of the Curriculum Framework with strikethroughs and underlines removed will be available early in 2010.

Superintendent’s Memorandum Number 138-09 provides an implementation timeline for the 2009 Mathematics Standards of Learning. The Mathematics Standards of Learning assessments will continue to be based on the 2001 Mathematics Standards of Learning through the summer 2011 test administration. Field-test items in spring 2011 will include the new content of the revised 2009 Mathematics Standards of Learning. In spring 2012, all items on the Mathematics Standards of Learning assessments will be based on the 2009 standards. Superintendent’s Memorandum Number 139-09 announced changes in the mathematics tests in 2012. Changes include the development of the grade-3 assessment as a grade level test rather than as cumulative (K-3) and pending available funds, the addition of an online end-of-course test for Algebra, Functions, and Data Analysis.
