COMMONWEALTH of VIRGINIA
Department of Education
December 18, 2009
TO: Division Superintendents
FROM: Patricia I. Wright, Superintendent of Public Instruction
As you know, each spring, the Department of Education collects data regarding school division compliance with the requirements of the Standards of Quality (SOQ) and other certifications. The data collected is used as part of the Board of Education’s Annual Report to the General Assembly on the Conditions and Needs of Public Schools in Virginia. The 2009 report as presented to and approved by the Board of Education on November 17, 2009, can be found at http://www.doe.virginia.gov/boe/meetings/2009/11_nov/agenda_items/item_h.pdf .
You will note that one section of the report concerns school divisions’ compliance or lack of compliance with the requirements of the SOQ. Appendix D of the report lists those divisions reporting noncompliance items. Some of you may receive a follow-up communication regarding noncompliance items reported for 2009 within the next few weeks.
We would also like to alert you to the fact that beginning with the 2010 data collection, the Department will be continuing to examine noncompliance items and the detailed corrective action plans for those items, and certain noncompliance issues will be checked against other Department data. You and the chairman of your school board may be contacted to clarify the corrective action plans after the data are compiled. Particular attention will be paid to those noncompliance items that are recurring.
