COMMONWEALTH of VIRGINIA
Department of Education
January 8, 2010
TO: Division Superintendents
FROM: Patricia I. Wright, Superintendent of Public Instruction
The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) will launch its redesigned website on Thursday, January 14, 2010. The new website conforms to state mandates for design, navigation, and accessibility, and includes a variety of features to enhance communication between the department, schools and school divisions, and the general public. The address for the redesigned VDOE website will be same as the current site: http://www.doe.virginia.gov.
The new VDOE website is organized by topic, with 15 “top-level” topics appearing in a menu on the left side of every page of the site. Content within each top-level topic is accessed through a menu of subtopics that appears on the right side of each page. This navigation scheme is maintained throughout the site.
Navigation menus for subtopics also include links to content of potential interest located in other areas of the site. “Bread crumbs” at the top of each page help users keep track of their location when using the site. There also is a listing on the home page of “quick links” to high-interest content that will change according to the needs of the department and the Commonwealth’s public schools.
VDOE has prepared the following resources to assist users in learning the new site:
These aids also will be available in a “User Tips & Hints” area, which can be accessed from a link in the footer on each page of the new VDOE website. In addition, VDOE staff has been directed to communicate directly with contacts in schools and central offices after the launch about where critical content is located on the new site.
