April 16, 2010

TO: Division Superintendents

FROM: Patricia I. Wright, Superintendent of Public Instruction

SUBJECT: 40th Anniversary of Earth Day

Earth Day is a wonderful opportunity not only to teach about the environment, but also to make school facilities healthier and more energy efficient. As schools prepare for Earth Day 2010, consider registering for the free Educators' Network at http://earthday.org/education. The online curricula and learning tools will enable teachers to incorporate environmental education into the classroom through standards-based lessons. The school greening resources also provide information and ideas on improving facilities and creating enhanced learning environments.

Earth Day Network has a successful history of environmental education initiatives dating back to the first Earth Day in 1970. Schools involved in Earth Day Network programs today are saving money, reducing pollution, improving their communities and preparing students for the 21st century learning environment.

For this year's historic celebration, the Earth Day Network will assist in planning Earth Day activities and creating healthier, more sustainable schools. Contact Sean S. Miller at the Earth Day Network at education@earthday.org, telephone (202) 518-0044, or visit the website at http://www.earthday.net.
