The VMAST is an alternate assessment designed for students with disabilities identified under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004 (IDEIA), who are instructed in grade level content, but are not likely to achieve proficiency in the same time frame as their non-disabled peers. According to the United States Department of Education, these students represent approximately two percent of students in a tested grade. The VMAST will provide eligible students with access to online assessments in reading and mathematics that include research-based supports identified by Virginia educators. Additional information about the VMAST participation criteria and practice assessment items is available on the Virginia Department of Education website at http://www.doe.virginia.gov/testing/alternative_assessments/vmast_va_mod_achievement_stds_test/index.shtml
The Virginia Department of Education has developed a two-year implementation schedule for the Virginia Modified Achievement Standards Test. VMAST mathematics assessments will be available for eligible students with disabilities in grades 3 through 8 and Algebra I beginning in 2011-2012. A large scale field test of VMAST mathematics assessments will be conducted in spring 2011. The VMAST reading assessments will be available for eligible students in grades 3 through 8 and End-of-Course English: Reading beginning in 2012 -2013. Reading assessments will be field tested in spring 2011-12.
Questions regarding the VMAST implementation schedule should be directed to the student assessment staff at firstname.lastname@example.org or by phone at (804) 225-2107.
