August 6, 2010

TO: Division Superintendents

FROM: Patricia I. Wright, Superintendent of Public Instruction

SUBJECT: 2010 Virginia School Plant Managers Association Conference

After two very successful conferences, please join other school operations and maintenance experts from across Virginia in attending the third annual Virginia School Plant Managers Association (VSPMA) conference. The theme for this year’s conference is “Challenging Times = Great Opportunities” and will focus on identifying affordable solutions for keeping school buildings operational despite reduced budgets. This year's event will feature sessions presented by industry leaders, networking at regional breakout sessions, vendor exhibits, and educational sessions for all school facility, custodial, energy, and maintenance professionals. The conference will feature Dr. William C. Bosher Jr., Executive Director, Commonwealth Education Policy Institute, as the moderator for the division superintendent’s panel. In addition, the VSPMA is partnering with Virginia Tech in the education and dissemination of information regarding new requirements for K-12 Integrated Pest Management programs. Superintendents Memo #163-10, Application of Pesticides on School Property, http://www.doe.virginia.gov/administrators/superintendents_memos/2010/163-10.shtml, was recently posted regarding this subject.

This year's conference will be held October 17-20, 2010, at the Sheraton Roanoke Conference Center, in Roanoke, Virginia. I encourage your school maintenance personnel to attend this affordable and educational event and to support this organization's efforts.

The full conference schedule and online downloadable registration forms are available at the VSPMA conference Web site, http://www.k12masters.com/vspma/index.html.
