FROM: Patricia I. Wright, Superintendent of Public Instruction

SUBJECT: Reading Comprehension Videos

The Virginia Department of Education is pleased to announce an innovative Web site for elementary teachers in kindergarten through grade three. "Elementary Reading Comprehension and Vocabulary Strategies Videos" is a collection of video vignettes demonstrating effective strategies and activities for elementary school classrooms. The strategies and activities presented in the vignettes may be adapted and used with students at all grade levels.

In each video clip, a Virginia elementary teacher demonstrates vocabulary and comprehension strategies that can be used to promote students’ vocabulary development and comprehension skills. Each of the strategies presented is taken from the English Standards of Learning Enhanced Scope and Sequence. This Web site is available at http://www.doe.virginia.gov/instruction/english/elementary/reading/reading_vocabulary_strategies.shtml.

For additional information, please contact Thomas Santangelo, elementary English/reading specialist, Office of Standards, Curriculum, and Instruction, by e-mail at Thomas.Santangelo@doe.virginia.gov, or by telephone at (804) 225-3203.
