As part of the Virginia Department of Education's ongoing effort to ensure compliance with professional development requirements under Section 1111(2) (C) and Section 3115(C) (2) of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, a fall Institute for teachers of English Language Learners (ELLs) in kindergarten through grade eight will be offered. The Institute, entitled "What's Different About Teaching Reading to Students Learning English" has been developed by the Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL) and will be held on November 17-19, 2010, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the following two sites:

The purpose of the Institute is to provide participants with strategies to increase proficiency in reading for ELLs. This training is open to teachers of ELLs, elementary classroom teachers, secondary content teachers, and reading teachers. Registration for each site is limited to forty-eight participants.
Registration costs, materials, breakfast, lunch, and breaks will be provided for all participants. Additionally, lodging will be provided for participants requiring an overnight stay. The room cost will be master-billed to the Department upon departure. A block of hotel rooms will be reserved at the state rate for participants. Evening meals, parking, and travel costs are the responsibility of the participants. However, these expenses are authorized activities and may be charged to local Title I, Part A; Title II, Part A; Title III, Part A; or Title IV, Part B, budgets.
