SUBJECT: Public Comment on the Board of Educationís Proposed Guidelines for Policies on Concussions in Student-Athletes, Senate Bill 652, Passed by the 2010 General Assembly

On November 18, 2010, the Board of Education accepted for first review the proposed Guidelines for Policies on Concussions in Student-Athletes. The 2010 General Assembly amended the Code of Virginia to include §22.1-271.5 directing the Board of Education to develop and distribute to school divisions by July 1, 2011, guidelines for policies dealing with concussions in student-athletes, and to define appropriate licensed health care providers authorized to evaluate and provide written clearance for return to play.

Senate Bill 652 also requires each school division to develop policies and procedures:

The Board is now seeking public comment on the proposed Guidelines for Policies on Concussions in Student-Athletes which can be found on the Department of Education's Web site at: http://www.doe.virginia.gov/boe/meetings/2010/11_nov/agenda_items/item_l.pdf.

Public comment on the proposed Guidelines for Policies on Concussions in Student-Athletes will be taken until December 20, 2010, and can be submitted via e-mail to concussion@doe.virginia.gov.

Comments on the proposed Guidelines for Policies on Concussions in Student-Athletes may also be sent via mail or faxed by December 20, 2010, to:
