COMMONWEALTH of VIRGINIA
Department of Education

TO: Division Superintendents
FROM: Patricia I. Wright, Superintendent of Public Instruction
We are pleased to announce the release of two new technical assistance documents for use in your division. The Autism Spectrum Disorders Guidelines and the Transition Guide for Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders were created in collaboration with staff at the Virginia Commonwealth University Autism Center for Excellence (VCU ACE) and are designed to be tools for educators, administrators, and parents working to improve services for students with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). These documents can be found on the Virginia Department of Education Web site at: http://www.doe.virginia.gov/special_ed/disabilities/autism/index.shtml .
In addition to the work that has been done on these new resource documents, VCU ACE has been making significant progress in defining its core goals and objectives. The center is a collaboration among the Department of Education; the VCU School of Education, Department of Special Education and Disability Policy; the VCU School of Medicine, Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation; and the VCU Research Rehabilitation and Training Center. VCU ACE is dedicated to four important activities on behalf of students with ASD: research, technical assistance, training, and collaboration with stakeholders. Additional information about long term technical assistance options for your division will disseminated in early 2011.
Questions about these initiatives may be referred to Samantha Marsh, education specialist for autism and intellectual disabilities at (804) 371-7421 or via e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org .
