SUBJECT: Board of Educationís Guidelines for Policies on Concussions in Student-Athletes, Senate Bill 652, Passed by the 2010 General Assembly

The 2010 General Assembly amended the Code of Virginia to include §22.1-271.5 directing the Board of Education to develop and distribute to school divisions by July 1, 2011, guidelines for policies dealing with concussions in student-athletes, and to define appropriate licensed health care providers authorized to evaluate and provide written clearance for return to play.

On January 13, 2011, the Board of Education adopted the proposed Guidelines for Policies on Concussions in Student-Athletes. A copy of the Guidelines can be found online at http://www.doe.virginia.gov/boe/guidance/health/concussions_in_student_athletes.pdf.

Senate Bill 652 also required each school division to develop policies and procedures:
