February 25, 2011

TO: Division Superintendents

FROM: Patricia I. Wright, Superintendent of Public Instruction

SUBJECT: 2010-2011 School Health Advisory Board Annual Progress Report and Local Wellness Policy Status Report

The purpose of this memo is to request the completion of the annual School Health Advisory Board Progress Report, as required by the Code of Virginia at § 22.1-275.1.  All School Health Advisory Boards (SHAB) are required to submit an annual report on the status and needs of student health in the school division to the local school board, the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE), and other appropriate parties.

The annual SHAB report has been modified to include descriptions of the goals and accomplishments of local School Health Advisory Boards.  The report also includes a status report on the development and implementation of the Local Wellness Policy.  School divisions have been encouraged to use the local SHAB, in conjunction with nutrition advisory councils and other advisory groups, as the infrastructure to address the local wellness issue.  If a committee other than the SHAB has been charged with implementation of the Local Wellness Policy, please forward that section of the report to the responsible committee for completion.  The Local Wellness Policy Status Report will be forwarded to the VDOE School Nutrition Programs office.

The deadline for submission is June 1, 201l.  Access to this report is available through the Single Sign-on for Web Systems (SSWS). Each school division has designated a contact person who has the password to access the system.

Questions about the SHABs or the annual report may be directed to Caroline Fuller, comprehensive school health specialist, at(804) 225-2431 or Caroline.Fuller@doe.virginia.gov.   Questions about the Local Wellness Policy and status report should be directed to Lynne Fellin, associate director, School Nutrition Programs at (804)225-2074 or Lynne.Fellin@doe.virginia.gov.
