COMMONWEALTH of VIRGINIA
Department of Education
March 18, 2011
TO: Division Superintendents
FROM: Patricia I. Wright, Superintendent of Public Instruction
The Virginia Department of Education is pleased to announce a webinar for school divisions with schools on the Title I “watch” list. “Watch” schools are those Title I schools that did not make Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) in reading/language arts, mathematics, or both for the 2010-2011 school year based on the 2009-2010 Standards of Learning assessments and are not currently in School Improvement. These schools have been designated watch schools because they will enter Title I School Improvement for the 2011-2012 school year if they do not meet AYP in the same subject area for a second consecutive year. The webinar will focus on the sanctions that must be implemented when a school enters year one of Title I School Improvement. The webinar is designed for school division superintendents, Title I coordinators, and principals of Title I schools that are designated as watch schools.
School divisions were notified of schools that are considered watch schools through letters to division superintendents dated February 9, 2011. The notification includes a description of a watch school as well as a list of the schools in each school division that are considered watch schools.
The webinar will be offered on Wednesday, May 4, 2011, from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. and repeated from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. the same day. Attachment A contains a webinar registration form to be faxed by Friday, April 29, 2011, to Helen Tucker, administrative assistant, at (804) 371-7347. The form contains a place to list questions you would like addressed during the webinar.
