COMMONWEALTH of VIRGINIA
Department of Education
April 1, 2011
TO: Division Superintendents
FROM: Patricia I. Wright, Superintendent of Public Instruction
At the March 24, 2011, Board of Education meeting the Department of Education was authorized to proceed with the K-12 English Language Arts textbook state approval process. It is anticipated that the review will be completed by April 2012.
An important part of the approval process for the K-12 English Language Arts textbooks is the review of the publishers’ submitted items by teachers, curriculum supervisors, administrators, English Language Arts educators, and others who have expertise with the content of the 2010 English Standards of Learning. The Department of Education is seeking nominations from division superintendents for individuals who are qualified and available to serve on committees to review K-12 English Language Arts textbooks during the summer of 2011. Nominees should be teachers, curriculum supervisors, or administrators who have expertise with the content areas and the standards.
Committee members reviewing the K-12 English Language Arts textbooks and instructional materials will be asked to review the submitted textbooks, and submit correlation worksheets to the Department, prior to convening for a two-day consensus meeting on September 29-30, 2011, for a final review of all submitted materials. Committee members who are not under contract with a school division will receive a stipend for their summer review, and all committee members may receive recertification points, pending the approval of their school division. The Department of Education will cover expenses for mileage, meals, and lodging related to the two-day consensus meeting following approved state guidelines.
All individuals who wish to serve on the English Language Arts Textbook Review Committee must submit an application through the Web-based process, Assessment Committee Application Processing System (ACAPS). Applicants must apply for a specific committee: K-2, 3-5, 6-8, 9-10, or 11-12. The application will require a professional reference and division approval. The procedure for submitting the Web-based application is available at https://p1pe.doe.virginia.gov/acaps/. Completed applications are due to the Virginia Department of Education through the Web-based process by May 2, 2011. Committee members will be notified by May 20, 2011. Committee members will be selected based on expertise and experience in English Language Arts and balanced regional representation.
