The Board of Education developed Guidelines for the Prevention of Sexual Misconduct and Abuse in Virginia Public Schools to help local school boards meet the requirements of legislation approved by the 2008 General Assembly (HB 1439 and SB 241) requiring local school boards to develop policies and procedures with a focus on the prevention of sexual abuse of students by school board employees.
Guidelines for the Prevention of Sexual Misconduct and Abuse in Virginia Public Schools provides policy objectives and guidance for the development of local policies and procedures to deter misconduct, provide accountability, and establish clear and reasonable boundaries for educators and students.
The guidance document was approved by the Board on March 24, 2011, and is now available on the Virginia Department of Education Web site at http://www.doe.virginia.gov/boe/guidance/safety/prevent_sexual_misconductabuse.pdf. If you need additional information about the guidelines, please contact Charles B. Pyle, director of communications, via e-mail at Charles.Pyle@doe.virginia.gov or telephone at (804) 371-2420.
