FROM: Patricia I. Wright, Superintendent of Public Instruction

SUBJECT: Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship Program Funding Cut

The U.S. Department of Education (USED) recently informed the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) that due to budget cuts to federal programs across the country, there will be no new awards made under the Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship program for fiscal year 2011. It is anticipated the program will be eliminated in 2012.

Virginia will not receive a federal grant to fund Virginia students, and applications submitted for the 2011 scholarship cannot be considered for awards this year. The status of funding for students currently receiving the scholarship is still being considered.

Any information released from the USED regarding funding for current scholarship recipients or future budget changes for the Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship will be shared with school divisions as appropriate.

Please share this information with students who were nominated from your school division as well as administrators, school counselors, and scholarship coordinators in your high schools.

If you have questions regarding the Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship Program, please contact Joseph Wharff, school counseling connections specialist, by e-mail at Joseph.Wharff@doe.virginia.gov or by phone at 804-225-3370.
