Department of Education
June 10, 2011
TO: Division Superintendents
FROM: Patricia I. Wright, Superintendent of Public Instruction
As part of the Virginia Department of Education’s ongoing effort to assist school divisions in meeting the parental participation requirements for Title I, Part A, Academic Achievement of the Disadvantaged, and Title III, Language Instruction for Limited English Proficient and Immigrant Students, under the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, a Summer Professional Development Institute will be offered. The two-day Institute entitled Parents as Educational Partners (PEP): School Related Curriculum for Language Minority Parents will be offered on July 19-20, 2011, in Staunton, Virginia. The Institute provides training for school divisions to utilize a curriculum designed to assist Limited English Proficient (LEP) parents in overcoming the language and cultural barriers that may prevent them from participating fully in their children’s educational experiences.
The Institute will be held at The Stonewall Jackson Hotel and Conference Center, 24 South Market Street, Staunton, Virginia. Registration costs, materials, breakfast, lunch, and breaks will be provided to participants for each day of the training. Additionally, a limited block of hotel rooms will be reserved for July 18-19, 2011, at the state rate for participants requiring an overnight stay. The room cost will be master-billed to the Department upon departure. Evening meals, parking fees, and travel costs are the responsibility of the participants. However, these expenses are authorized activities and may be charged to local Title I, Part A, or Title III budgets.
Please contact The Stonewall Jackson Hotel and Conference Center directly at (540) 885-4848 to make reservations and refer to “PEP Institute.”
The Office of Continuing and Professional Education at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) will manage online registration. The deadline for registration is Friday, July 15, 2011. Participants may register online for the Institute at:
