TO: Division Superintendents
FROM: Patricia I. Wright, Superintendent of Public Instruction
The purpose of this memorandum is to provide information regarding revisions to the Family Life Education Guidelines and Standards of Learning, which were approved by the Virginia Board of Education on July 28, 2011. The revisions satisfy the requirements of Senate Bill 906, which directed the Board of Education to require “dating violence and the characteristics of abusive relationships to be taught at least once in middle school and at least twice in high school.” In addition, technical edits have been made to the standards to conform to current terminology.
Senate Bill 906 (Deeds) Chapter 634 § 1 was passed as an uncodified Act of the General Assembly. It states:
… that any family life education curriculum offered by a local school division shall require the Standards of Learning objectives related to dating violence and the characteristics of abusive relationships to be taught at least once in middle school and at least twice in high school, as described in the Board of Education's family life education guidelines.
Technical edits have been made throughout the document. The standards that were revised to comply with the 2011 legislation are listed below.
|Grade Level||Amended Standards of Learning Descriptive Statements||Page|
|Seventh Grade||7.3, 7.4||28|
|Eighth Grade||8.5, 8.13||31-32|
