FROM:  Patricia I. Wright, Superintendent of Public Instruction

SUBJECT:  2011-2012 National Title I Distinguished Schools Recognition Program

Virginia has received information regarding the application process for the 2011-2012 National Title I Distinguished Schools Recognition Program.  This program, sponsored by the National Association of State Title I Directors (NASTID), provides an opportunity for Title I schools from every state to be recognized for their educational achievements.  Each state may select two schools for the 2011-2012 national recognition.

Selected schools must have a poverty rate of at least 35 percent.  One school may be nominated to represent Category 1: school that has exceeded the state’s Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) benchmarks for two or more of the most current consecutive years. A school may be selected to represent Category 2: school that has significantly closed the achievement gap for the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 student subgroups for two or more of the most current consecutive years.  In addition to meeting these requirements, nominated schools must have made AYP and have been fully accredited for two or more of the most current consecutive years.

School divisions are invited to nominate one Title I school to represent either of the two categories indicated above.  A peer review process will be used to select the two Virginia schools for national recognition. A 2011-2012 National Title I Distinguished Schools Recognition Program intent to submit form, instructions for developing the application, and school participation form are attached to this memorandum.

School divisions wishing to nominate a school should submit an intent form by e-mail to NationalTitleIDistinguishedSchools@doe.virginia.gov by Friday, September 9, 2011.  The application must be submitted electronically to the referenced e-mail address by 5 p.m. Friday, September 23, 2011.  Recipients of these awards will be announced by letter in late October.  These two schools will be honored during the 2012 National Title I Conference, January 21-24, 2012, in Seattle, Washington.
