TO:  Division Superintendents

FROM:  Patricia I. Wright, Superintendent of Public Instruction

SUBJECT:  Early Literacy Instructional Videos

The Virginia Department of Education is pleased to announce an additional set of instructional videos for elementary English and reading.  “Elementary Reading Early Literacy Instructional Videos” is a collection of video vignettes demonstrating effective instructional strategies and activities for elementary school classrooms.  “Elementary Reading Comprehension and Vocabulary Strategies Videos” were introduced in September 2010. The strategies and activities presented in the vignettes may be adapted and used with students at all grade levels.

In each video clip, a Virginia elementary teacher demonstrates instructional strategies and activities that can be used to promote students’ early literacy skills.  Each of the strategies presented supports the 2010 English Standards of Learning.  Both the comprehension and the early literacy videos are available at http://www.doe.virginia.gov/instruction/english/elementary/index.shtml.

For additional information, please contact Thomas Santangelo, elementary English/reading specialist, Office of Standards, Curriculum, and Instruction, by e-mail at Thomas.Santangelo@doe.virginia.gov or by telephone at (804) 225-3203.
