COMMONWEALTH of VIRGINIA
Department of Education
October 7, 2011
TO: Division Superintendents
FROM: Patricia I. Wright, Superintendent of Public Instruction
As first indicated in Superintendent’s Memorandum No.276-11, the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) is pleased to announce one-time incentive grants to pay the cost of the $1,650 application fee for implementation of a “new” practical nursing program in a comprehensive high school or career and technical education center. This grant is being provided to school divisions with Perkins federal funds and must be encumbered by June 29, 2012. Payment will be made on a cost-reimbursement basis.
Reimbursement requests must be submitted by September 28, 2012, using the Virginia Department of Education Funding for the Practical Nursing Program Application Fee Form, Attachment A. Invoices are not to be submitted with requests, but must be maintained at the division level for audit purposes.
According to employment projections produced by the Virginia Employment Commission and the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, the number of jobs for licensed practical nurses (LPN) is expected to increase by 15 percent from 2008 to 2018. Virginia LPNs have median annual earnings of $37,700. Providing career opportunities for students in the practical nursing program will contribute significantly to Virginia’s work force needs today and in the future.
