TO:  Division Superintendents

FROM:  Patricia I. Wright, Superintendent of Public Instruction

SUBJECT:  Geography Awareness Week: November 13-19, 2011

I would like to call your attention to Geography Awareness Week, to be held this year the week of November 13-19, 2011.  Every year since 1987, when federal legislation established the third week in November as Geography Awareness Week, the National Geographic Society has promoted the importance of geography to the public and to schools throughout the nation.  Each year a different theme is highlighted and approximately one and a half million people participate in related activities.

Information about Geography Awareness Week is found in My Wonderful World, on National Geographic's Web site at www.mywonderfulworld.org.  The theme for this year’s Geography Awareness Week is Geography: The Adventure in Your Community.

For further information, please contact Dr. Beverly Thurston, coordinator of history and social sciences and international education, Office of Standards, Curriculum, and Instruction, by e-mail at Beverly.Thurston@doe.virginia.gov or by phone at (804) 225-2893.
