COMMONWEALTH of VIRGINIA
Department of Education

TO: Division Superintendents
FROM: Patricia I. Wright, Superintendent of Public Instruction
The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) has secured funds to provide an extension of the one-time $300 mini-grant to each high school that purchases the Economics and Personal Finance Collection for $399 and adds on the $300 package that includes the English Language Arts, Mathematics, and all other programs that are available from NBC Learn. The entire package will cost each high school $699 and VDOE will reimburse the school division $300 for each high school’s initial purchase. Ordering information and the required order form for Virginia schools are available online. This reimbursement mini-grant is provided only for those schools that did not take advantage of the reimbursement opportunity previously.
Reimbursement requests for the NBC Learn Archives on Demand package purchases must be submitted using the Virginia Department of Education Funding for Mini-Grants for High School Purchase of NBC Learn Archives on Demand Reimbursement Request Form, Attachment A. Invoices are not to be submitted with requests, but must be maintained at the division level for audit purposes.
An additional incentive has been offered through NBC by providing an 18-month subscription for the original price of a 12-month subscription, if the order is placed by December 31, 2011. The subscription will start on March 1, 2012; but schools will have access to the program starting immediately. This will give access for the rest of this school year and through March 2013.
There will be no financial support from VDOE after this one-time grant initial subscription ends. Special discounted subscription rates also are available from NBC News for elementary and middle schools; however, VDOE will not be providing any purchase reimbursement support.
VDOE Funding for the Mini-Grants for High School Purchase of NBC Learn Archives on Demand Reimbursement Request Forms must be submitted to W. Terry Dougherty, grants administrator, career and technical education, prior to June 8, 2012.
Questions concerning the NBC Learn Archives on Demand reimbursement process may be addressed to W. Terry Dougherty, CTE grants administrator, at Terry.Dougherty@doe.virginia.gov or at 804-225-3349.
