As part of the Virginia Department of Education’s ongoing effort to ensure compliance with professional development requirements under Section 1111(2)(C) and Section 3115(C) (2) of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, a spring institute for teachers of English Language Learners (ELLs) in kindergarten through grade twelve will be offered. The institute, entitled “What’s Different About Teaching Reading to Students Learning English,” has been developed by the Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL) and will be held on February 15-17, 2012, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the following two sites:

The purpose of the institute is to provide participants with strategies to increase proficiency in reading for ELLs. This training is open to all educators working with ELLs. Registration for each site is limited to 50 participants.
Registration costs, materials, breakfast, lunch, and breaks will be provided for all participants. Additionally, a limited block of hotel rooms will be reserved at the state rate for participants requiring an overnight stay.
The lodging cost will be master-billed to the Department upon departure. Evening meals, parking, and travel costs are the responsibility of the participants. However, these expenses are authorized activities and may be charged to local Title I, Part A; Title II, Part A; Title III, Part A; Title IV, Part B; or Title VI, Part B, Subpart 2 budgets.

The Office of Continuing and Professional Education at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) will manage online registration. The deadline for registration is February 8, 2012. Participants may register online for the institute at: http://www.cpe.vt.edu/reg/learnread/.
