This memorandum is issued to inform you of action taken by the Board of Education at its November 17, 2011 meeting regarding the process by which locally prescribed graduation requirements that exceed the requirements of the Regulations Establishing Standards for Accrediting Public Schools in Virginia (SOA) may be amended or discontinued. The SOA, in 8 VAC 20-131-50, permit local school boards to establish graduation requirements that exceed the requirements prescribed by the Board of Education, provided these requirements are approved by the Board. In addition, the additional requirements remain in place until the local school board submits a request to the Board to amend or discontinue them.
At its November 17, 2011 Board meeting, the Board approved the following guidance for the process by which these requests would be reviewed and approved:
Currently, 48 school divisions have been approved for additional graduation requirements. However, some of these requirements may now be outdated. You will find the Department’s list of school divisions with approval for additional graduation requirements on this Department’s Web site at http://www.doe.virginia.gov/boe/meetings/2011/11_nov/agenda_items/item_d.pdf as part of the November 17, 2011 Board boilerplate regarding this issue. Please follow the above process and submit a request to the Board if you would like to amend or discontinue any of your additional graduation requirements.
