SUBJECT:  Review of the K-12 Fine Arts Standards of Learning: Seeking Input from the School Community

At the February 23, 2012, Board of Education meeting the Department of Education was authorized to proceed with the K-12 Fine Arts Standards of Learning review process.  It is anticipated that the review will be completed by July 2013.

An important part of this review process for the Fine Arts Standards of Learning is the solicitation of comments from classroom teachers, administrators, curriculum supervisors, fine arts educators, and others who have worked with the current standards. Please inform personnel in your school division that forms for comments regarding the current standards are located on the Virginia Department of Education Web site at http://www.doe.virginia.gov/testing/sol/standards_docs/fine_arts/2013/index.shtml.  Comments will be received at this address from February 24, 2012 to March 26, 2012.

The Department of Education is also seeking nominations from division superintendents for individuals who are qualified and available to serve on the Fine Arts Standards of Learning Review Team.  The team will reflect four committees that will each be charged with the review of one of the four fine arts disciplines:  Dance Arts, Music, Theatre Arts, or Visual Arts.  Nominees should be teachers, principals, administrators, content specialists, or other educators who have knowledge of the content areas and experience with standards development.

Selected team members will be assigned to a specific fine arts committee and asked to review information related to their content area prior to convening for a three-day committee meeting during the summer 2012.  Committee meetings will be held at the Holiday Inn Koger Conference Center, Richmond, Virginia on the following dates:

  Visual Arts July 17-19
  Dance Arts July 24-26
  Theatre Arts July 24-26
  Music July 31-August 2

Committee members who are not under contract or who take personal leave with a school division will receive an incentive for their participation, and all committee members may receive recertification points, pending the approval of their school division.  The Department of Education will cover expenses for mileage, meals, and lodging related to the review process following approved state guidelines.

All individuals who wish to serve on one of the committees of the Fine Arts Standards of Learning Review Team must submit an application through the Web-based process, Assessment Committee Application Processing System (ACAPS). Applicants must apply for a specific committee and grade level:  Dance Arts 6-12, Music K-5, Music 6-8, Music/Vocal 6-12, Music/Instrumental 6-12, Theatre Arts 6-12, Visual Arts K-5, Visual Arts 6-8, or Visual Arts 9-12.  The application will require a professional reference and division approval.  The procedure for submitting the Web-based application is available at https://p1pe.doe.virginia.gov/acaps/. Completed applications are due to the Virginia Department of Education through the ACAPS process by March 30, 2012.  Committee members will be notified by April 11, 2012. Committee members will be selected based on expertise and experience in dance arts, music, theatre arts, or visual arts and balanced regional representation.
