TO: Division Superintendents
FROM: Patricia I. Wright, Superintendent of Public Instruction
The Virginia Department of Education, in collaboration with certified OSHA faculty from West Virginia University, will conduct an OSHA 510 Construction Standards Course and OSHA 500 Construction Train-the-Trainer Course for Virginia trade and industrial education instructors who require OSHA certification. Both courses will be held at the Norfolk Marriott Waterside, 235 East Main Street, Norfolk, Virginia 23510, and offered in conjunction with the Virginia Association of Trade and Industrial Educators (VATIE) Summer Conference as follows: July 25-31, 2012 – OSHA 510; and August 3-6, 2012 – OSHA 500 - this course may also be taken by instructors who need to recertify.
To participate in the OSHA 500 course, instructors will need to bring proof that they have had the prerequisite OSHA 510 or were certified previously in OSHA 500 or 502. Successful completion of the OSHA 500 course will enable instructors to teach and award students an OSHA 10 or 30 card during the next four years.
Each instructor will be provided a paper copy manual and a CD that has digital copies of the OSHA 500 with over eighty PowerPoint presentations on all of the OSHA construction standards. These curriculum resources are designed to be integrated into construction trade and other related courses.
Workshop registration will be paid for by the Virginia Department of Education. Mileage, meals, hotel, and any other travel related expenses will be the instructor’s responsibility.
To enroll in the OSHA courses, please complete the attached registration form and return it by June 1, 2012, to the Office of Career and Technical Education Services at firstname.lastname@example.org, or by fax at 804-530-4560.
