SUBJECT:  Virginia Assessment Program Testing Schedule for 2012-2013

The state schedule for the Standards of Learning (SOL) tests and the Virginia Modified Achievement Standards Tests (VMAST) for the 2012-2013 school year is available on the Department of Education’s Web site at http://www.doe.virginia.gov/testing/test_administration/index.shtml.  Please share these testing dates with appropriate personnel so that other activities may be scheduled without conflicts.  The following information will assist you in preparing for the 2012-2013 school year.

Fall 2012 SOL Writing Tests

In fall 2012, school divisions will continue to administer the paper-and-pencil grade 8 and end-of-course (EOC) SOL writing tests based on the 2002 English SOL.  The multiple-choice component of the writing tests should be administered on either Monday, October 22, or Tuesday, October 23, 2012.  The short paper component of the tests must be administered statewide on Wednesday, October 24, 2012.  Students who are absent on the date of the statewide short paper component will respond to a different writing prompt, the alternate prompt, during the make‑up period.  Graduating seniors who are eligible for two opportunities to take the EOC English: Writing test should be given an alternate multiple-choice component and the alternate prompt on a later date as their second test opportunity, but not later than Friday, November 9, 2012.  All SOL writing tests must be completed and answer documents shipped for scoring by Friday, November 9, 2012.

Fall 2012 SOL Non-Writing Tests and VMAST Tests

School divisions will continue to have flexibility in determining their testing windows for grades 6 through 8, content specific history and EOC non-writing SOL tests administered in the fall. In addition, the VMAST mathematics tests for grades 6 through 8 and Algebra I will be available for administration in fall 2012. School divisions will be asked in August 2012, to identify their fall testing window(s) from within the larger statewide test window that will begin Monday, December 3, 2012, and will extend through Friday, March 1, 2013.

Spring 2013 SOL Writing Tests

As stated in Superintendent’s Memorandum #200-11, dated July 22, 2011, the SOL writing test will be administered online beginning in spring 2013 and will assess the full implementation of the 2010 English SOL.  To complete the new SOL writing test in spring 2013, students must be administered an online multiple-choice/technology-enhanced item (MC/TEI) component and an online short-paper component.  School divisions will have flexibility in determining when they administer each component in their schools; however, students should not be administered both components on the same day.

The spring 2013 statewide online SOL writing test window is scheduled for Monday, March 11, to Friday, April 12, 2013. In December 2012, each division director of testing (DDOT) will be asked to identify when the school division will administer the spring 2013 grade 5, grade 8, and EOC SOL writing tests online within the statewide online writing test window.  Pending final review of information from the spring 2012 online writing field test, the statewide online writing test window may be expanded to include additional days in spring 2013.

Students with a documented need for a paper/pencil test who are scheduled to take the spring 2013 SOL writing test and students needing to retake the EOC English: Writing test based on the 2002 English SOL should be administered paper/pencil versions of the appropriate SOL writing test during the week of March 4, 2013. The multiple-choice component of the paper/pencil writing tests will be administered on either Monday, March 4, or Tuesday, March 5, 2013.  The short-paper component of the paper/pencil tests must be administered statewide on Wednesday, March 6, 2013.  Students who are absent on the date of the statewide pencil/paper short-paper component will respond to a different writing prompt, the alternate prompt, during the make‑up period. Graduating seniors must be administered the paper/pencil English: Writing test based on the 2002 English SOL. These students remain eligible for two writing test  opportunities and should be administered the alternate multiple-choice component and alternate prompt on a later date as their second test opportunity, but not later than Tuesday, March 19, 2013.  All paper/pencil SOL writing tests for graduating seniors must be completed and answer documents shipped for scoring by Tuesday, March 19, 2013.  Paper/pencil SOL writing tests for all other students must be completed and answer documents shipped for scoring by Friday, March 22, 2013.

Spring 2013 SOL Non-Writing Tests

Beginning in spring 2013, school divisions will have flexibility in determining their testing windows for grades 3 through 8, content specific history and the EOC non-writing SOL tests. In addition, the VMAST assessments for grades 3-8 mathematics and reading as well as Algebra I and EOC reading will be available for administration in spring 2013. Each DDOT will be asked to identify three testing windows of 3 to 4 weeks between Monday, April 15, 2013, and Friday, June 28, 2013, for: a) SOL and VMAST testing for grades 3 through 8, b) EOC testing for graduating seniors and c) EOC testing for all other students.  All tests will be administered online except for those students with a documented need for a paper/pencil test. Answer documents for paper/pencil tests should be shipped on the last day of each identified testing window and not later than Friday, June 28, 2013.  Each DDOT will be asked to identify the school division’s spring 2013 SOL non-writing testing windows early in January 2013, when providing the spring 2013 SOL testing participation counts.

Summer 2013 SOL Writing Test

The statewide testing window for all online summer 2013 EOC SOL writing tests will be announced at a later date.  The statewide testing window for all paper/pencil EOC SOL writing tests will begin during the week of July 15, 2012.  The multiple-choice component of the English: Writing test will be administered on either Monday, July 15, or Tuesday, July 16, 2013.  The short-paper component of the EOC English: Writing test must be administered statewide on Wednesday, July 17, 2013.   Graduating seniors who are eligible for two opportunities to take the writing test will be given the alternate multiple-choice component and alternate prompt as their second test opportunity on a later date, but not later than Friday, July 26, 2013. Answer documents for the EOC English: Writing test must be shipped for scoring by July 26, 2013.

Summer 2013 SOL Non-Writing Tests

School divisions will determine their testing windows within the statewide test window that will begin Monday, June 17, 2013, and will extend through Friday, September 20, 2013, for grade 8 SOL and VMAST reading and mathematics, VMAST for Algebra I and EOC Reading, and EOC.
