COMMONWEALTH of VIRGINIA
Department of Education
May 4, 2012
TO: Division Superintendents
FROM: Patricia I. Wright, Superintendent of Public Instruction
The Virginia Department of Education is pleased to announce the eighth annual From Vision to Practice Institute, to be held July 10-12, 2012, at the Williamsburg Hotel and Conference Center in Williamsburg, Virginia. The theme of this year’s Institute is The Future of Learning – A Shifting Landscape.
Education in the 21st century is undergoing a significant transformation. The traditional concept of obtaining an education within the borders of the classroom walls is being expanded to include other forums for learning. Advances in technology and communications have ushered in an era of unprecedented information gathering and exchange by providing students with instant access to virtual resources. At the same time, educators must find creative and flexible ways to address the needs of diverse learners in the context of increased accountability and limited resources. This year’s Institute is designed to help educators find effective approaches for: 1) using 21st century resources and instructional tools to enhance learning experiences both in and out of the classroom; and 2) identifying resources to deliver meaningful instruction to all students in an engaging and relevant fashion.
The recommended attendees for the Institute are: 1) administrators; 2) principals; 3) teachers; 4) school counselors; and 5) pupil services personnel.
