COMMONWEALTH of VIRGINIA
Department of Education
May 4, 2012
TO: Division Superintendents
FROM: Patricia I. Wright, Superintendent of Public Instruction
This memorandum is to let you know that The Honorable Governor of Virginia, Robert F. McDonnell, The Honorable Marla Graff Decker, Secretary of Public Safety, and The Honorable Kenneth Cuccinelli, Attorney General of Virginia are inviting you to join them at the Executive Level Gang Summit to be conducted on June 27-28 2012, at the Hotel Roanoke, in Roanoke, Virginia. The Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) is hosting this event, which will include the presentation of current information on gangs and gang violence in Virginia and will feature a variety of successful programs and approaches to address these problems.
This invitation is being extended to executive level decision makers from Virginia’s law enforcement community, Virginia superintendents of schools, leaders from social services, community groups and the faith-based community. Collectively, all of these groups represent the most effective tool at our disposal to combat one of the most serious long-term issues facing the Commonwealth.
There are proven and effective ways to prevent young people from joining gangs and to mobilize communities to address the issue of gangs collectively. The intent of the Summit is to showcase selected successful programs that show how we, as a Commonwealth, can work together effectively to combat gangs and gang violence. A program for the two days is attached.
