COMMONWEALTH of VIRGINIA
Department of Education
May 4, 2012
TO: Division Superintendents
FROM: Patricia I. Wright, Superintendent of Public Instruction
At the Virginia Board of Education meeting on April 26, 2012, the Department of Education was authorized to proceed with the K-12 Computer Technology Standards of Learning review process. It is anticipated that the review will be completed by December 2012.
An important part of this review process for the Computer Technology Standards of Learning is the solicitation of comments from classroom teachers, administrators, curriculum supervisors, instructional technology resource teachers, and others who have worked with the current standards. Please inform personnel in your school division that forms for comments on the current standards are located on the Virginia Department of Education Web site at http://www.doe.virginia.gov/testing/sol/standards_docs/computer_technology/2012/index.shtml. Comments will be received at this Web address from May 4 to June 4, 2012.
The Virginia Educational Technology Advisory Committee (VETAC) will develop the first draft of the Computer Technology Standards of Learning using these comments as well as input from their represented organizations. The draft will be posted for further comments during the early summer. An announcement will be made when this draft is available for review. A final draft will be developed in August 2012 and presented at the September 27, 2012, Virginia Board of Education meeting.
If you have questions about the K-12 Computer Technology Standards of Learning review, please contact Jean Weller, educational technology specialist, by e-mail at jean.weller@doe.virginia.gov or by telephone at (804) 225-2825.
