Superintendent’s Memo #136-12

State seal, Commonwealth of Virginia

COMMONWEALTH of VIRGINIA
Department of Education

May 25, 2012

TO:  Division Superintendents

FROM:  Patricia I. Wright, Superintendent of Public Instruction

SUBJECT:  Economics and Personal Finance Online Course Hosting

The Department of Education is offering an additional option for school divisions that want to offer the Economics and Personal Finance online course previously announced in Superintendent’s Memo No. 068-12. School divisions may choose to facilitate the course with a locally-assigned teacher within Virtual Virginia’s learning management system at no cost. Virtual Virginia will provide training for division teachers in August; however, participating teachers should have experience teaching in an online or blended learning environment. This course is aligned to the Virginia Standards of Learning and fulfills the one-credit course requirement in Economics and Personal Finance.

The Economics and Personal Finance online course is also available at no cost to all Virginia public schools to host within their own compatible learning management system. Furthermore, school divisions may enroll students in the course via Virtual Virginia. Additional sections are open, but seats are limited and filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

For additional information or to enroll your division’s students, please contact Cheri Kelleher, program coordinator for Virtual Virginia, at (804) 786-9281 or via e-mail at cheri.kelleher@doe.virginia.gov.
