Department of Education

TO: Division Superintendents
FROM: Patricia I. Wright, Superintendent of Public Instruction
The Department of Education (DOE) is developing two iBook textbooks, Economics and Personal Finance, to complement the DOE’s Economics and Personal Finance online course or to use as a comprehensive textbook for other economics and personal finance courses. The two-volume set covers the entire Virginia Standards of Learning for Economics and Personal Finance.
The iBooks contain 2,600 pages of content, graphic novel scenarios, interactive activities, embedded review questions, and interactive graphing tools that enable users to manipulate variables and analyze information in graph and chart form. Sample chapters will be available by June 15 for preview in the iTunes iBookstore, and preorders will be accepted at this time. Both iBooks will be released this summer for use during the 2012-2013 school year at a cost of $14.99 each.
The iBook content will also be available in PDF format at no cost to Virginia public schools. The PDF format does not require an iPad and can be viewed or printed using any PDF reader application. Please note that interactive media will not be available in this format.
In addition, both iBook and PDF users will be granted access to the Flash-based EconLab, a simulated environment that enables students to apply their understandings of economics and personal finance.
