On September 14, 2012, the Virginia Department of Education’s Office of Student Services is hosting a seminar for school division personnel entitled Conditions for Learning: Effective Practices to Support Student Engagement and Success. The focus of the day will be building a positive school culture and climate to promote academic achievement. It is to be video-streamed via the Internet from the School of Education at The College of William and Mary. The event will be recorded and posted online for subsequent access.
Presenters include Dr. David Osher, American Institutes for Research; Dr. Susan Barrett, Sheppard Pratt in Maryland; Dr. Sangeeta Tyagi, YouthBuild, USA; staff from JustChildren; and a panel of local school representatives to share their experiences. Topics to be addressed include Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports, Positive Youth Development, and how Virginia schools are incorporating a focus on the whole child and high levels of engagement in the school community to improve student retention and outcomes of youth.

Time – The Institute will begin at 9:30 a.m. and end by 3 p.m.
