COMMONWEALTH of VIRGINIA
Department of Education
September 7, 2012
TO: Division Superintendents
FROM: Patricia I. Wright, Superintendent of Public Instruction
The Department of Education, through the Virginia State Personnel Development Grant, has established demonstration schools in the Content Literacy Continuum® (CLC) developed by the University of Kansas Center for Research on Learning using the Strategic Instruction Model® (SIM). The CLC is an evidence-based adolescent literacy framework to address the literacy needs of all adolescents, aligned with Response to Intervention (RtI) and other multi-tiered systems of support.
Liberty Middle School and Patrick Henry High School in Hanover County are in the sustaining phase of the CLC framework adoption and recently received the National SIM Impact Award for 2011 from the University of Kansas Center for Research on Learning. Culpeper Middle School and Culpeper County High School are in the implementing stage of the framework. Metz Middle School and Osbourn High School in Manassas City, and Tazewell Middle School and Tazewell High School are in the early implementing stage of the framework. Demonstrations encompassing the middle and high schools will be held at these locations throughout the 2012-2013 school year to provide teachers, administrators and other stakeholders the opportunity to learn more about the CLC. Attendees at a demonstration will have the opportunity to listen to a student panel and discuss their perspective on the framework. They will also observe implementation of SIM in classes, converse with a cross-section of stakeholders, and examine data across all levels.
The demonstrations will occur at the following locations and dates:
Culpeper County Public Schools – November 15, 2012
Hanover County Public Schools – February 13, 2013
Manassas City Public Schools – April 17, 2013
Tazewell County Public Schools - November 8, 2012
Those interested in attending a demonstration event are directed to complete the demonstration application posted at http://www.logicdepot.com/surveys/run/start.cfm?skey=DQPYJ-FGFJ3. For interactive information on the CLC in Virginia, please visit http://virginia.kucrl.org/.
