TO: Division Superintendents
FROM: Patricia I. Wright, Superintendent of Public Instruction
The Virginia Department of Education in cooperation with the Virginia Business Publications, LLC, is pleased to provide the R U “College & Career” Ready? Magazine, 2013 edition, Focus on the Future, at no cost for students enrolled in the sophomore class. It will be mailed to school counseling departments in January for distribution. The magazine provides information for all students on the importance of making wise decisions about their post-secondary goals.
This edition also includes a letter of endorsement from Governor McDonnell emphasizing the need to plan now for life after high school. The R U “College & Career” Ready? Magazine is part of a series, including the teacher's guide ready or not and a parent's brochure. Both the student and teacher guides reinforce selected Standards of Learning.
We are requesting the magazine be presented formally to students rather than just distributing copies to them. This could be accomplished through a classroom guidance activity or by offering instruction as an extracurricular activity in cooperation with business/industry and continuing education partners.
If you have questions concerning any of the products in the series or need additional information, please contact Joseph Wharff, school counseling career connections specialist, Office of Career and Technical Education Services, at CTE@doe.virginia.gov or by telephone at 804-225-2052.
