COMMONWEALTH of VIRGINIA
Department of Education
February 1, 2013
TO: Division Superintendents
FROM: Patricia I. Wright, Superintendent of Public Instruction
Under the provisions of Virginia’s approved application for waivers from certain requirements of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA), the Other Academic Indicator (OAI) is no longer used as a factor in determining if a school meets annual measurable objectives (AMOs). However, performance on the OAI remains among the data the state assures it will report under the ESEA flexibility agreement. Therefore, for schools without a graduating class, school divisions will need to continue to identify one of the following as an OAI solely for reporting purposes: attendance; science; history; or writing.
Beginning February 1, 2013, the Other Academic Indicator (OAI) data can be entered through the Web-based form contained in the Single Sign-on for Web Systems (SSWS) application. Staff members responsible for selecting the indicator should contact the SSWS Account Manager to gain access to this application. After the OAI has been selected for the school in each division the verification form must be signed by the division superintendent and faxed to the Department of Education, at (804) 530-4516, by March 1, 2013.
Questions or comments relating to the Educational Registry Application Data Collection or the AMO Other Academic Indicator selection should be directed to Educational Applications at Vickie.McCrary@doe.virginia.gov or by telephone at (804) 225-2827.
Questions or comments relating to the ESEA Waiver and the requirement to choose an Other Academic Indicator should be directed to Veronica Tate, director of the Office of Program Administration and Accountability at veronica.tate@doe.virginia.gov or (804) 225-2870.
