TO: Division Superintendents
FROM: Patricia I. Wright, Superintendent of Public Instruction
The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) is pleased to announce the K-12 English Language Arts Standards of Learning (SOL) Institutes to be held in October 2013 at four sites throughout the Commonwealth. These are professional development opportunities provided by the state to support the implementation of 2010 English Standards of Learning.
K-12 English Language Arts SOL Institutes will utilize a train-the-trainer model to provide professional development training that focuses on vocabulary strategies, nonfiction reading, and persuasive writing. Participants will attend two different concurrent breakout sessions with either an elementary or secondary focus. Additionally, participants will attend a general session on research using primary sources presented by staff from The Library of Congress. A working lunch will feature time for teachers to exchange ideas of best practices and successful classroom lessons implementing the 2010 English Standards of Learning.
Registration – The Office of Continuing and Professional Education at Virginia Tech will manage registration. Each division superintendent or designee should identify a division-level contact who will identify and register the four participants from the division including: (1) English Language Arts supervisor, (1) elementary teacher, (1) middle school teacher, and (1) high school teacher. Confirmation of the team’s registration will be e-mailed to the division-level contact. If the registration form submitted indicates that additional staff members are interested in attending the Institute, the designee will be informed if space is available after all divisions have registered. Registration for each of the sites closes two weeks prior to the Institute or when registration is filled. Registration can be completed online at http://www.cpe.vt.edu/reg/esoli/.
